SKIP Barts - India
Location
SKIP Barts will be researching a new project in India this summer. A team of SKIP committee members is going to visit a number of NGOs to collect the information needed to select a new SKIP Barts project. The project will be selected on the basis of need, and whether we, as healthcare students, feel we can contribute effectively in facilitating sustainable change in the areas that they require.
History
Last year we embarked on a pilot project in a special needs school in the state of Gujarat. This consisted of two groups, a mixture of committee members and volunteers, who worked with the management, teachers and children in the school. During our month there, we aimed to assist them to recognise and achieve their potential for change.
Although everyone who went on the trip gained tremendously from the experience and cared greatly for the children, we felt that due to the nature of the problems and our limitations as medical students, we could not form an effective long term partnership with the school. We felt it was more appropriate to withdraw from the project before any dependency was created. We will be carefully researching our new project to ensure appropriate needs are identified and are well within our limitations as a group of healthcare students.
What will our project do?
This will be defined following our needs assessment visit this summer.
What are our goals?
To establish a project in India that can benefit children through simple and sustainable interventions.
How do we raise money?
Prior to our original pilot project we have had a number of successful fundraising events including a ‘SKIP Disco Dandia’, speed dating and cakes sales.
